The problem

Across the UK, more businesses are refusing cash payments, leaving many of us feeling excluded — especially older people, those with disabilities, and the vulnerable. Cash is a lifeline to many, whilst also protecting privacy, security and freedom for all of us.

Last year, cash payments dropped by 7%. With bank branches also closing at an alarming rate, our option to use cash is under threat from all sides.

Recent legislation has been enacted that aims to maintain cash access, but it doesn’t go far enough to stop the rapid tide of branch closures, or ensure that cash remains a viable payment option.

Why cash matters

Resilience

Cash works when technology fails — no power cuts or internet outages can stop you from paying

Privacy

Cash is private and doesn’t track your spending or share your data, offering a secure and anonymous way to pay in a world of growing surveillance.

Supports local communities

Paying with cash keeps money in the local economy, supporting small businesses and keeping high streets vibrant.

Healthy competition

Cash is essential for maintaining a balance of power between the public and the banking industry. Without it, banks could monopolise payments and raise fees.

Cash helps budgeting

Paying digitally can increase our spending by up to 40%, because it’s designed to be easy and effortless. Many also use cash to budget — you can only spend what you have!

UK-Sovereign Payments

Cash is the only form of payment that is truly British. It ensures we maintain control over our own money, without relying on foreign-owned banks or tech companies.

What can we do to preserve it?

Individually we can all make small changes, such as paying with cash whenever possible and discussing with friends and family. Read our Get Involved page for more information.

At a national level we need better legislation: recent laws have been little more than window dressing. Read more on our legislation page.
